"We're going to have to transfer him to another
school," Scully moaned as they exited the
principal's office.
"I think that's a slight exaggeration," Mulder
responded, trying to calm his wife.
She turned around sharply to face him. "That girl
is almost bald now because of that wad of
bubblegum he stuck in her hair."
Mulder winced as he remembered the now spiky
haircut of the small first grader who had been on
the verge of crying the entire meeting. Will
hadn't been much better throughout it. He seemed
to have a new fixation with his shoelaces and when
he answered the grown-ups' questions it was in a
mumbled voice.
The principal had asked all the parents to step
outside so that she could talk to the children
alone. The parents waited in uncomfortable silence
for ten minutes until the door to the principal's
office opened.
Both children smiled weakly at each other and then
ran to their parents.
"I think we've worked out the problem," the
principal announced and there was a collective
sigh of relief.
As they were all heading out the little girl
stopped her parents and ran back to where Will was
standing. She glanced up at Mulder and Scully and
then quickly leaned over and pecked Will on the
cheek. "See you on Monday Will." And then ran back
to her parents.
Mulder and Scully exchanged shocked looks with the
little girl's parents.
Will was blushing furiously and wouldn't meet his
parent's gaze but they could just make out a goofy
grin that flitted across his face.
Suddenly it all made sense to Mulder. "Ah, I get
it."

Emily couldn't believe she'd let Sarah talk her
into this.
"You were class president all through middle
school. Why wouldn't you run in high school too?"
Sarah had argued.
Finally Emily had conceded to at least attend the
meeting to see if she wanted to go through with
it.
Since her locker was near the teacher that would
be leading the meeting's classroom she was one of
the first ones there.
"You here for the meeting?" a boy, who looked like
he was a year or two older than her, asked when
she walked in.
"Yes."
He handed her a paper to fill out. "It'll start in
about fifteen minutes."
"Thank you." She walked to a desk in the front and
pulled out a book but didn't actually read more
than a few sentences because she kept glancing at
the boy by the door who was greeting the freshman
as they walked in. There was something familiar
about him.
***
"What do you mean you 'get it'? Please explain to
me how they went from not being able to look at
each other without crying to kissing."
Mulder laughed. "I have no idea how that
happened."
"Then how can you 'get it'?"
Mulder walked over to the refrigerator and pulled
out a can of Coke. He held another one up and
offered it to Scully but she shook her head and
waited for him to explain. He took a long gulp
before answering. "I get the whole bubblegum
fiasco."
He must have still have been expressing himself
vaguely because she waved her arm in an 'and?'
gesture.
"Haven't you ever seen those movies where a boy
takes the girl in front of his seat's braid and
dips it in an inkwell? Will has a crush on his
little classmate and, being a six-year-old boy,
has no idea how to express it. Well," he said
remembering the farewell, "I suppose now he does."
***
The beginning of the meeting was about all the
paperwork they were going to have to fill out if
they decided to run. What signatures they were
going to need. What you could put on a poster.
Where you could hang posters around the school.
"Okay, now I'm going to let Luke Doggett, our
junior class president, talk to you about what
each job will require."
The boy who had greeted her walked up to the front
of the classroom and began explaining what would
be expected of them. Emily listened but only half
her brain was paying attention. The other half was
mulling something over.
'Luke Doggett? I know that name. Why do I know
that name?'
***
"Isn't he supposed to think girls have cooties or
maybe not even get the difference between boys and
girls at the age of six?"
"Are you asking me if our little boy is
precocious?" he teased lightly.
"Of course not. But just so you know, I'm not
chaperoning their dates, that'll have to be you,"
she teased back while she walked out of the
kitchen.
He followed after her. "You want me to alienate
another one of our children? Emily wouldn't speak
to me for a week the last time I chaperoned one of
her dates."
"Mulder, you sat in-between them in the movie
theatre."
***
When Luke finished giving them the details the
teacher took over the meeting and he sat down next
to Emily.
Emily was trying to forget her burning curiosity
about the boy sitting next to her and listen to
the teacher when a note plopped down in front of
her. She glanced around to make sure no one was
looking and then opened it.
(Checkers)
That was all it said. She scribbled back a little
note and covertly passed it back.
(What?)
(I was that boy that taught you how to beat the
pants off anyone at checkers. You've been trying
to place me the entire meeting.)
(How'd you know? And when did you teach me
checkers?)
(You kept looking at me funny, and when she said
my name your eyebrows lifted and then they knitted
together. As for the other, I taught you when we
were in daycare together.)
(That was you?)
"Well if there aren't anymore questions you guys
are free to go home," the teacher announced. A
wave of sound filled the classroom as all the
students who had remained silent the entire
meeting began talking all at once and began filing
out the door.

Mulder and Scully were reading over a report of
strange lights in the northwest when Will came
walking into the room. He climbed onto his
mother's lap and curled into her.
"Hey buddy," Mulder said and reached over and
ruffled his hair. "How you doing?"
"I'm sorry I got in trouble today mommy and
daddy."
Scully looked down at her son. "Well, we don't
want you to do it again but it's okay."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
***
"So you want a rematch?"
Emily turned around at the sound of Luke's voice
and tried to contain her smile. "I don't know... I
haven't played in a while."
"Hmm, well that is a problem. Maybe we should do
something else then. You like movies?"
"Occasionally."
"Next Saturday?"
"Sounds good to me."
The End
